The centre column is made up of 16 long and narrow rectangular wood-framed panels surrounding the structure of the Carousel. The wood frame contains metal panels that have had a variety of images over the decades. A close examination of the wooden frames determined that any restoration would not last more than a few years and it was decided to create new panels. Parks and Open Spaces staff fabricated the new wood frames while Westgate Collegiate’s shop class fabricated the metal panels. The Save Our Carousel’s Heritage and Records Committee, following significant research, consultation and discussion decided on the design of the panels. Diamond shape mirrors would be inserted onto the metal panel while carved trim and flowers would adorn the wood frame.
